Stained Glass artist and conservator
Charlotte Roden is an independent glass artist and stained glass conservator based in Udine, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy. She designs and makes bespoke stained glass and conserves historic windows, taking on projects of every scale. She has won awards in both design and conservation from the Worshipful Company of Glaziers, the historic London livery company for the craft: she was Commended in the Stevens Competition for Architectural Glass 2019 and received the Award for Excellence 2016.
After completing an MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management at the University of York, she worked in studios across the UK, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany and France on both new glass and conservation projects.
She holds Accredited Conservator status from the Italian Ministry of Culture, sits on the Conservation Committee of the British Society of Master Glass Painters (BSMGP), and is a board member of Corpus Vitrearum Italy.
Charlotte’s Master’s dissertation was titled “The ‘cameo process’: the twentieth-century acid-etching technique by William Meikle and Sons in Glasgow, Scotland”. The cameo process was developed primarily as a solution to the paint loss issues of the nineteenth-century while also encompassing the Arts and Crafts Movement’s wish to celebrate the qualities of glass without the dulling effect of glass paint. A flashed glass was acid-etched to achieve graphic and clear details of faces and drapery which, even at close quarters, is difficult to distinguish from glass paint.
